Green Muslims Unite in “Fish for the Future” Campaign to Protect Great Lakes

Wisconsin and Michigan Green Muslims, alongside over 70 organizations, culminated their “Fish for the Future” campaign on July 12, 2025, in Milwaukee, according to wisconsinmuslimjournal.org. The event set a global record with 86,262 origami paper fish displayed, each symbolizing a commitment to protect the Great Lakes and advocating for the shutdown of Enbridge’s Line 5 oil pipeline.

The 645-mile Line 5, built in 1953, transports crude oil and fossil gas liquids, posing significant environmental and safety risks to 400 rivers, wetlands, tribal lands, and the Great Lakes, which contain 84% of North America’s surface freshwater. Its deterioration and Enbridge’s history of spills, including a major one in 2010, are key concerns.

Both Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer and the Bad River Band Tribe in Wisconsin have acted against Line 5, with a June 2023 court ruling ordering its shutdown by June 2026 if not removed. Despite Enbridge’s proposed reroutes, critics argue the dangers persist. Wisconsin Green Muslims, active for two decades, are joined by Michigan Green Muslims in these efforts, emphasizing the Islamic principle of water as a sacred gift and advocating for clean, safe water.
