Trump Cuts Threaten U.S. Science as NSF Faces Political Interference, Mass Layoffs
……………….
A Guardian investigation has found that sweeping budget cuts and political interference under the Trump administration are threatening to dismantle the National Science Foundation (NSF) and weaken America’s scientific leadership. The NSF, a key federal funder of basic research, is facing a proposed 56% budget cut and a 73% reduction in staff and fellowships.
Researchers warn that the administration’s unprecedented meddling is undermining the NSF’s gold-standard peer-review system. Under the so-called Department of Government Efficiency (Doge), officials can now veto research proposals without explanation, and grants have been abruptly canceled mid-project. So far, over 1,600 active NSF grants have been terminated, many in states that backed President Biden.
Scientists say the crackdown targets studies related to diversity, equity and climate change, while focusing funding on AI, nuclear and biotech. The cuts and interference threaten to drive young scientists overseas and weaken the future STEM workforce that fuels U.S. industries and innovation.
The situation extends beyond the NSF. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) also faces steep cuts, including the termination of its ecosystems research, which supports species protection and climate adaptation. Internal staff say Doge officials now approve or reject research with minimal scientific input.
Former and current NSF staff warn that vital research addressing environmental risks and food security is being stifled, with entire proposals returned unread. Universities and students are feeling the impact, with graduate fellowships slashed by 75%.
Despite the administration’s claim that the cuts will reduce bureaucracy and “politically motivated agendas,” critics argue they risk crippling American science and handing the advantage to global competitors. Many fear the cuts could erase decades of progress in innovation, basic research and workforce development, damaging industries and local economies for years to come.
