Malnutrition Deaths Rise Among Gaza Children as Blockade Persists

The number of children in Gaza dying from acute malnutrition has risen to 66, according to local health officials, as Israel’s blockade and ongoing military operations worsen humanitarian conditions. Gaza’s Government Media Office attributed the increase to closed border crossings and restrictions on baby formula and nutritional supplements, warning that vulnerable groups, including babies and the sick, are at heightened risk.

Gaza health officials report additional impacts, including over 2,100 miscarriages from January to May, dozens of neonatal deaths, and high rates of maternal malnutrition. Dr. Marwan Al-Hams from Gaza’s Ministry of Health said 56% of pregnant women suffer from malnutrition, which will likely increase mortality rates.

UNICEF warned of a “deadly cycle” of starvation and disease, reporting that more than 5,100 children under five were treated for acute malnutrition in May—a significant rise since February. Of these, 636 children were found to have severe acute malnutrition, which can be fatal without immediate treatment.

UNRWA noted severe damage to health facilities and medicine shortages, further straining Gaza’s fragile health system. Local officials are calling for urgent international intervention to allow food, medicine, and fuel into the territory to prevent more deaths.
