Pakistan Bolsters Muharram Security, Launches Crackdown on Hate Speech

As Muharram 1447 AH begins, Pakistan has significantly ramped up security measures across the country. The Ministry of Interior has approved the nationwide deployment of the Pakistan Army and civil armed forces to aid civilian power, following requests from all provincial governments, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

In a proactive move to ensure peace during the sacred month, the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) has established a specialized team to combat hate speech, misinformation, and incitement on social media. This expert team, comprising technical specialists and digital analysts, will prioritize monitoring and taking legal action against individuals spreading religious hatred online.

These deployments and digital crackdowns stem from a high-level meeting chaired by Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, where detailed security plans for all regions were reviewed. Officials agreed on strict action against those promoting religious hatred and emphasized ensuring adherence to a code of conduct for processions and gatherings. The use of modern technology will monitor these events.

Decisions regarding potential mobile phone or internet service suspensions during Muharram will be made in mutual consultation with provinces, based on ground realities and security assessments. The federal government has pledged full support to maintain peace and order, affirming that no individual will be permitted to provoke unrest or engage in subversive activities.
