Muslims celebrate blessed birth of Imam Ali al-Hadi

Muslims on Thursday celebrated the birth anniversary of Imam Ali al-Hadi (peace be upon him), the tenth Imam in the lineage of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family). Born at dawn on the 15th of Dhu al-Hijjah in the year 212 AH in the district of Sarya near Medina, his birth is remembered by millions of Shias and lovers of Ahl al-Bayt, peace be upon them.

Imam al-Hadi (peace be upon him), also known by his titles al-Naqi (the Pure) and al-Hadi (the Guide), succeeded his father Imam al-Jawad (peace be upon him) at just eight years of age. Despite his youth, he was immediately recognized for his unmatched wisdom and deep knowledge. His 33-year Imamate spanned some of the most politically and ideologically turbulent years in Shia history, dominated by the rule of several Abbasid caliphs including al-Mu’tasim, al-Wathiq, and the notoriously oppressive al-Mutawakkil.

Under intense surveillance and political pressure, particularly after being forcibly relocated from Medina to Samarra, Imam al-Hadi continued to preserve and promote the teachings of the Prophet’s family. Through his network of trusted representatives, known as the Wikala, he maintained strong communication with Shias across regions like Iraq, Yemen, and Egypt. This network is widely regarded as a precursor to the concept of religious authority (marja’iyya) during the era of occultation.

The Imam is also remembered for his profound theological and jurisprudential contributions. His famous treatise on divine justice explains the delicate balance between predestination and free will, encapsulated in the principle: “Neither absolute compulsion nor total delegation, but a matter between the two.” One of the most enduring legacies of Imam al-Hadi (peace be upon him) is Ziyarat al-Jami’a al-Kabira, a comprehensive and eloquent ziyarat (pilgrimage supplication) that articulates the lofty status of the Imams and their connection to divine authority.

Historians have also recorded remarkable accounts of the Imam’s moral strength and miraculous insight. One such story involves his help to a craftsman terrified over a broken gemstone intended for a powerful commander. Imam al-Hadi (peace be upon him) assured the man that the issue would resolve peacefully — and it did — a moment that strengthened his followers’ faith in the divine guidance of the Imams.

As the Shia community worldwide celebrates this auspicious day, scholars and believers alike reflect on Imam al-Hadi’s steadfast leadership, spiritual depth, and enduring impact on Islamic thought. His life stands as a beacon of knowledge, patience, and resistance in the face of tyranny.
