Taliban authorities in Ghor province have announced the discovery of 60 ancient gold coins dating back to the Ghurid Empire, Khaama Press reported. The coins were uncovered during road construction in the Allahyar district, according to Abdul Hai Zaeem, head of the Department of Information and Culture in Ghor.

The Ghurid Empire, which ruled parts of Afghanistan, Iran, northern India, and Central Asia from the 12th to early 13th centuries, is known for its significant contributions to Islamic art, architecture, and learning. While the historical importance of the coins is considered substantial, their monetary value has not yet been assessed.

The coins have been transferred to the provincial museum for preservation and study. Despite this important archaeological find, concerns remain over the protection of Afghanistan’s cultural heritage under Taliban rule. Organizations like UNESCO and Human Rights Watch warn that instability, neglect, and illegal excavations threaten the country’s ancient sites. Experts call for international cooperation to help safeguard Afghanistan’s shared global heritage.
