UN Alarmed by Israel’s Gaza Expansion Plans as Aid Crisis Worsens

UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed “alarm” over Israel’s reported plans to expand military operations in Gaza, warning it would cause “countless more civilian deaths” and further destruction, deputy spokesman Farhan Haq stated Monday, Xinhua reported. The warning followed Israel’s Security Cabinet vote to seize Palestinian territory and prolong its occupation.
The UN condemned Israel’s blockade of humanitarian aid since March 2, including a proposed privatization scheme using U.S. contractors instead of UN-supervised distribution. Haq emphasized the UN’s refusal to participate in any system violating humanitarian principles of neutrality and independence.
OCHA reported critical shortages: bakeries and community kitchens have closed, warehouses are empty, and children face starvation. Over 70% of planned aid deliveries (19 of 27) were blocked by Israeli authorities this weekend. Fuel shortages have crippled water pumps, sewage systems, and hospitals, with reserves inaccessible in Israeli-restricted zones.

Airstrikes killed scores of civilians, including children, over the weekend, while looting escalates amid desperation. Despite partial repairs to a damaged water line, northern Gaza’s supply remains halved.
The UN reiterated calls for an immediate ceasefire, hostage releases, and unrestricted aid access, stating: “Gaza must remain integral to a future Palestinian state.”
