G7, EU Demand Sudan Ceasefire as War Enters Third Year Amid “Atrocities and Famine”

World powers condemn Sudan’s war crimes and famine tactics, urging immediate ceasefire and humanitarian access as casualties surpass 130,000.

The G7 nations and European Union on Tuesday issued a rare joint condemnation of Sudan’s escalating war, demanding an immediate ceasefire as the conflict marks its third year with catastrophic humanitarian tolls, Anadolu Agency reported. Foreign ministers from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK, the US, and EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell “unequivocally denounce[d] the ongoing conflict, atrocities and grave human rights violations” by the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

Their statement highlighted “widespread conflict-related sexual violence, ethnically motivated attacks, and reprisal killings,” accusing both factions of creating “the world’s largest displacement crisis.” Over 15 million people have fled their homes, while famine spreads amid reports of starvation being weaponized—a violation of international law. The death toll, officially over 20,000 per the UN, is estimated by US researchers at 130,000. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) revealed at least 8,000 disappearances in 2024 alone, calling it “the tip of the iceberg.”

The G7-EU demanded compliance with the Jeddah Declaration, including civilian protections and unhindered aid access via borders with Chad and South Sudan. “Sustainable peace must center Sudanese civilians,” they stressed, urging inclusion of women, youth, and civil society in negotiations. Recent battlefield shifts saw the RSF lose key territories to the army, but neither side has engaged in serious talks.

The coalition reaffirmed support for Sudan’s “sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity,” pledging diplomatic mobilization through the upcoming London Sudan Conference. The war, ignited on April 15, 2023, has devolved into a proxy conflict with regional spillover risks.
