ISIS Continues to Be Most Lethal Terror Group in 2024, Expanding Global Operations: Report

The Global Peace Index report reveals ISIS as the deadliest terrorist organization in 2024, despite a 10% decrease in deaths
According to the latest Global Peace Index report, ISIS and its affiliated groups were identified as the deadliest terrorist organization in 2024, responsible for over 1,800 deaths across 22 countries, Khaama Press reported. Although ISIS expanded its operations into 30 countries, the report indicates a 10% decrease in deaths attributed to the group compared to 2023, which saw 1,996 fatalities.
The report also highlights that in 2023, various terrorist groups, including ISIS, the Pakistani Taliban, Jamaat Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimeen, and Al-Shabaab, collectively accounted for over 4,200 deaths while operating in 29 countries. Notably, 36% of terrorist attacks worldwide in 2024 occurred without any group claiming responsibility, indicating a concerning trend of unclaimed violence.

ISIS continues to maintain a global presence, with its Khorasan branch becoming one of the most active jihadist groups, extending its operations from Afghanistan into Pakistan, Iran, Russia, and Central Asia. In 2024, ISIS Khorasan was linked to two significant attacks in Iran and Russia, prompting heightened counterterrorism efforts in those regions.
Despite a decrease in overall casualties in Afghanistan, which ranks ninth for terrorism under Taliban control, the country experienced a nearly 20% rise in terrorist attacks, with 87 incidents reported in 2024. The report underscores the ongoing security challenges and the necessity for continued international efforts to combat terrorism and address its root causes.
