WFP Halts Food Distribution in Sudan’s Zamzam Refugee Camp Amid Clashes

The World Food Program (WFP) has suspended food distribution in Zamzam Refugee Camp, North Darfur, due to escalating clashes between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), Anadolu Agency reported. This decision comes as intense fighting disrupts life-saving food and nutrition assistance for displaced individuals in the camp.
WFP Sudan spokesperson Leni Kinzli warned that without immediate assistance, thousands of families in Zamzam face starvation in the coming weeks. She emphasized the urgent need to resume safe aid delivery, stating that “the fighting must stop, and humanitarian organizations must be granted security guarantees.”
Currently, two million people across 27 locations in Sudan are experiencing or nearing famine, with the ongoing conflict since April 2023 resulting in over 20,000 deaths and 14 million displaced. The international community and the UN are increasingly calling for an end to the violence, highlighting the looming humanitarian catastrophe due to food shortages.
