UN Halts Food Aid in Sudan’s Zamzam Camp Amid Violence

The UN World Food Programme (WFP) has temporarily stopped food distribution in Zamzam camp, North Darfur, due to escalating violence, warning that thousands may starve, Reuters reported. This decision follows Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) suspending its operations in the camp, which houses around half a million people and has been targeted by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

WFP’s East Africa director, Laurent Bukera, emphasized the urgent need for safe aid delivery, stating that fighting must cease for humanitarian efforts to resume. The conflict, which began in April 2023, has resulted in significant displacement and hunger crises, with famine confirmed in Zamzam in August.

U.N. officials reported heavy weaponry use and market destruction in the camp, complicating aid access. Despite attempts, WFP managed only one convoy due to poor conditions and RSF obstruction. Over 24 million people in Sudan are experiencing acute hunger, highlighting the dire need for unhindered humanitarian access.
