UNESCO Urges Education Access for Afghan Girls on International Day of Women, Girls in Science

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) emphasized the urgent need for guaranteed access to education for Afghan women and girls on Tuesdya, coinciding with the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, Amu TV reported. UNESCO stated, “Ensuring access to education and opportunities in modern sciences empowers women and girls to build a brighter future for all.”

Despite these calls, millions of Afghan girls remain out of school due to the Taliban’s ongoing ban on female education, now in its third year. Many students lament the loss of their dreams to study as they find “Every door feels closed.”

The impact of the education ban has been profound, with UNESCO reporting that 1.5 million girls have lost a collective three billion hours of education. Furthermore, 30% of Afghan girls never attended primary school, and 100,000 women have had to abandon their university studies.

Some university students affected by the ban, have expressed feelings of hopelessness, as they are “unemployed, stuck at home, and falling into depression.” The international community continues to urge the Taliban to lift these restrictions and restore educational opportunities for Afghan girls.
