Shi Rights Watch (SRW)—an international pro-Shia rights organization—has called on the United Nations, the International Human Rights Council, the European Union, the Arab League, and all humanitarian organizations to take urgent action to stop what it described as a “humanitarian catastrophe” targeting Shias in Syria.
The organization emphasized the need to curb the crimes committed by terrorist groups in the region. In a statement received by Shia Waves Agency, the organization confirmed that it continuously receives documented reports of killings, torture, abuse, and other crimes against Shia Muslims.
SRW stressed that these violations are driven by sectarian extremism and occur without any deterrent or authority to stop them. The statement highlighted that thousands of Syrian Shia citizens are suffering from crimes that amount to “crimes against humanity,” particularly affecting women, children, and the elderly, signaling an impending humanitarian disaster largely ignored by both local and international media.
The organization pointed out that these severe violations contradict all international and social laws and norms, reflecting “ignorance and extremism driven by ugly hatred and motives for collective revenge, with no regard for innocent civilians.”
The statement emphasized that this catastrophe poses a challenge to the international community, which bears the responsibility of protecting innocent civilians under international laws and agreements, as well as helping them confront terrorism and violence committed by extremist groups.
