India: Waqf Panel Approves 14 Amendments, Rejects 44 by Opposition

The Joint Committee of Parliament (JCP) has approved 14 amendments to the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, while rejecting 44 proposed by the Opposition, India Express reported. Key changes include extending the registration period for Waqf properties and appointing senior government officials as arbiters in property disputes. The Opposition criticized the process, claiming the chairman acted in favor of the ruling government and disregarded procedural norms.

In a statement, the Opposition expressed concerns over the lack of discussion and transparency, noting that 95% of stakeholders opposed the Bill during hearings. JCP chairperson Jagdambika Pal defended the rejection of Opposition amendments, asserting that voting reflected the committee’s democratic process. The next JCP meeting is scheduled for Wednesday to consider the draft report on the Bill. The legislation aims to reform the governance of Waqf properties, but the Opposition remains vocal about its objections and calls for further dialogue.
