7,250 Irregular Migrants “Voluntarily Returned” from Tunisia in 2024

In 2024, Tunisian authorities reported that 7,250 irregular migrants voluntarily returned to their home countries, Anadolu Agency reported.

Mohamed Ben Ayed, the secretary of state to the Tunisian foreign minister, shared this information during a parliamentary session, highlighting the successful coordination with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and neighboring countries Algeria and Libya.

Ben Ayed noted the “positive development” in cooperation with these neighboring nations, which has contributed to a decrease in the number of irregular migrants arriving in Tunisia as they attempt to reach Europe. Amid growing economic and political challenges, Tunisia has emerged as a significant departure point for irregular migration. Tunisian officials regularly announce efforts to thwart migration attempts, reflecting the ongoing issues surrounding this crisis.
