Uyghurs in Thailand Launch Hunger Strike Amid Deportation Fears

Dozens of Uyghur men detained in Thailand have entered the second week of a hunger strike, protesting against what they fear is imminent deportation to China, where they could face torture and imprisonment, New York Times reported.

The detainees began their fast on January 10, shortly after being asked to sign “voluntary return” forms, which they all refused.

The men have been held in Thai detention centers for over a decade, having fled persecution in China. Following their hunger strike, concerns have heightened regarding their health, as many are already malnourished and suffering from chronic illnesses.

Thai authorities have denied any plans for deportation and claimed there is no ongoing hunger strike. However, human rights activists are pressing for access to the detainees, who have been largely cut off from outside communication. The situation has drawn international attention, with calls from U.S. officials urging Thailand to reconsider any plans to return the Uyghurs to China.
