Taliban leader pushes for stricter enforcement of morality law
Hibatullah Akhundzada, the Taliban leader, has reiterated the need for full implementation of Afghanistan’s Law of Vice and Virtue during a speech at a seminar in Kandahar, local news outlets reported.
The law, first introduced in 2022, imposes strict societal restrictions, particularly on women, including requiring full-body coverings and limiting women’s voices in public.
The 114-page law grants extensive authority to religious enforcers and is framed under Sharia law and the Hanafi school of jurisprudence.
International organizations, including the UN and Amnesty International, have condemned the law arguing that it violates human rights and further marginalizes Afghan women.
