Syrian Leader Ahmad al-Sharaa Approves Elections for Government Formation
Ahmad al-Sharaa, leader of the ruling group in Syria, announced on Monday plans to hold elections aimed at establishing a legitimate government, Khaama Press reported yesterday.
In an interview with Al Arabiya, he stated that drafting a new constitution will take up to three years, while organizing the elections could require an additional four years.
Al-Sharaa emphasized the importance of economic development, asserting that a free Syria is essential for regional security. He revealed intentions to dissolve the rebel group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, advocating for governance based on tolerance rather than suppression.
Furthermore, he affirmed that personal freedoms, including women’s rights regarding dress and appearance, will be protected under the new authority. Al-Sharaa’s statements signal a potential shift towards a more structured governance model in Syria, focusing on legal frameworks and individual rights, although significant time and resources will be necessary for implementation.
