Bangladesh urges EU to Expedite Formal Recognition of Palestine
Bangladesh has called on European Union (EU) member states to expedite the formal recognition of the State of Palestine, Arab News reported yesterday.
This appeal was made during a meeting of the Global Alliance for the Implementation of the Two-State Solution in Brussels, where Bangladesh’s delegation emphasized that recognition is vital for legitimizing Palestinian sovereignty and self-determination.
Currently, only 11 of the 27 EU member states recognize Palestine, with Spain, Ireland, and Slovenia joining this year amid ongoing conflicts in Gaza. Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs highlighted the importance of global support, noting that 149 countries back UN recognition of Palestine.
Additionally, the delegation urged EU states to influence permanent members of the UN Security Council to avoid vetoes that obstruct ceasefire efforts in Gaza. The recent UNSC resolution for a ceasefire was vetoed by the US, continuing the cycle of violence that has resulted in significant casualties in the region.
