Over 100 Rohingya Refugees on Boat Spotted Off Indonesia, Casualties Reported

A boat carrying over 100 Rohingya refugees was spotted off Indonesia’s westernmost province, with at least one deceased individual on board, Arab News reported yesterday citing local officials.

The Rohingya, a persecuted Muslim minority from Myanmar, often undertake perilous sea journeys in search of safety in Malaysia or Indonesia.

The vessel was located three to four miles off the coast of South Aceh district, its engine turned off. Community leader Muhammad Jabal, who delivered food and water to the refugees, confirmed the presence of children and a body on the boat.

The UN refugee agency (UNHCR) has been informed and hopes for an immediate rescue. Local sentiment is mixed, with some supporting the Rohingya while others express opposition.

Following another tragic development in Thailand, Human Rights Watch urged the Thai government to investigate the deaths of a group of Rohingya refugees found on October 17, and to protect survivors. Despite ongoing human trafficking issues, Thailand continues to deny UNHCR refugee screenings, treating Rohingya as illegal immigrants and violating international human rights laws.
