Supreme Court of India to Hear Plea for Jammu and Kashmir Statehood Restoration

On Thursday, the Supreme Court of India agreed to consider a plea for the time-bound restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, Muslim Mirror reported.

Senior advocate Gopal Sankaranarayanan urged the bench, led by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud, for an urgent hearing. The application was filed by Zahoor Ahmad Bhat, an academic, and Khurshaid Ahmad Malik, a socio-political activist advocating for the region’s rights.

This plea follows the Supreme Court’s December 11, 2023 ruling, which upheld the revocation of Article 370, granting special status to Jammu and Kashmir. The court mandated that assembly elections be held by September 2024, emphasizing the need for democratic processes. The earlier judgment highlighted the necessity of restoring statehood “at the earliest,” acknowledging the unique challenges faced by the region’s residents. The upcoming hearings are expected to attract significant attention, focusing on democracy and representation in Jammu and Kashmir.
