Pakistan: Militant Attacks Decline, Fatalities Surge in Q3 2024

A recent report from the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS) reveals a complex security landscape in Pakistan, where militant attacks have decreased by 7% in September, Dawn reported yesterday.

However, the third quarter of 2024 witnessed a staggering 90% rise in fatalities, totaling over 1,500 deaths this year. In September alone, militants conducted 77 attacks, resulting in 77 fatalities, including 38 security personnel and 23 civilians. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) emerged as the most affected region, with 47 attacks and 54 deaths.

In a significant counter-terrorism operation on September 12, security forces targeted the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) in Harnai, Balochistan, killing six key militants involved in assaults on security forces and civilians. Defense experts hailed this operation as a major victory, emphasizing the growing rejection of militant ideologies among the people of Balochistan.

Despite these efforts, the overall security situation remains critical, with political leaders and the public expressing frustration over the resurgence of terrorist groups that complicate counter-terrorism initiatives. Recent incidents, including a police mobile explosion in Quetta and laborer killings in Panjgur, underscore ongoing challenges in restoring stability.
