AI Learning to Think Like Humans: New Research Insights

A recent review published in Trends in Cognitive Sciences highlights how artificial intelligence (AI) is learning through cognitive processes akin to human thought, SciTeck Daily revealed. Led by Tania Lombrozo, a professor at Princeton University, the research identifies that AI models, particularly large language models like ChatGPT, can engage in self-correction and arrive at new conclusions through methods such as explanation, simulation, analogy, and reasoning.

This “on-demand learning” enables AI to adapt knowledge to new contexts, similar to how humans think and learn. For instance, explaining a concept can reveal gaps in understanding, while mental simulations help in decision-making. Lombrozo points out that AI can refine its responses when prompted for elaboration, mimicking human reasoning.

The study raises important questions about whether AI is genuinely “thinking” or merely imitating thought processes.
