Tajikistan Bans Corporal Punishment, Protecting 4 Million Children

Tajikistan has become the 67th country to ban corporal punishment of children, a landmark legislation welcomed by UNICEF, the organization’s website reported.

Effective since June, the law protects the nation’s 4 million children from violent discipline in all settings, including homes and schools.

UNICEF Representative Arthur van Diesen hailed the legislation as a significant advancement in child protection, emphasizing the government’s commitment to children’s dignity and physical integrity. He noted that while the legislative changes are crucial, further efforts are needed to ensure positive outcomes for children.

Globally, around 330 million children face physical punishment, which can severely impact their health, development, and well-being. The economic cost of violence against children is estimated at $7 trillion annually, about 8% of global GDP.

Tajikistan’s participation in the upcoming Global Ministerial Conference on Ending Violence Against Children in November underscores its dedication to global child protection efforts.
