Bangladesh: 5 journalists killed, dozens injured covering student protests

International human rights groups and media watchdogs are condemning the ongoing attacks on journalists in Bangladesh, calling on the interim government to ensure press freedom and accountability for perpetrators, VOA reported in an article yesterday.

Dozens of journalists were injured and at least five killed during the recent mass protests that led to the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Reporters have faced threats, beatings, and physical assault while covering the unrest, which began in June and escalated in July.

The violence has targeted journalists from various media outlets, including established newspapers and online platforms, and have continued even after the formation of the interim government.

The U.N. Human Rights Commission and the Committee to Protect Journalists have urged the interim government to prioritize press freedom and investigate these attacks. They have emphasized the importance of a safe and enabling environment for journalists to operate without fear of intimidation or reprisals.
