Marcos Expands Shariah Jurisdiction in Philippines
Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has signed a law expanding Shariah jurisdiction, creating new Islamic courts in the predominantly Catholic nation, Arab News reported yesterday.
The law introduces three additional Shariah judicial districts and 12 new circuit courts, increasing the total from 51 to 63. Previously limited to the Muslim-majority regions of Mindanao, the new courts will extend Shariah law’s reach to Luzon, including Metro Manila, and other islands with smaller Muslim populations.
Officials from the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao welcomed the decision, calling it a “victory for inclusivity” and a significant advancement in justice for Filipino Muslims. The expansion aims to enhance access to justice for the Muslim community, acknowledging their unique needs within the broader national framework. Shariah courts in the Philippines handle personal status law, financial matters, and halal certification, aligning with the Supreme Court’s Strategic Plan for Judicial Innovations 2022-2027.
