About 400 Million Worldwide Affected by Long COVID-19, Research Finds
A recent study published in Nature Medicine reveals that approximately 400 million people globally have experienced long COVID-19, Xinhua reported today.
The research highlights the significant economic impact of this condition, estimating annual costs around $1 trillion, which constitutes about 1% of the global economy.
Conducted four years after the emergence of COVID-19, the study aims to consolidate knowledge on long COVID-19 and outline future policy and research priorities. Ziyad Al-Aly, chief of research and development at the V.A. St. Louis Health Care System, emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach to address the ongoing challenges faced by patients.
The findings indicate that roughly 6% of adults worldwide have suffered from long COVID-19, with many not fully recovering. Treatment options remain a critical hurdle for healthcare providers and patients alike, underscoring the urgent need for continued research and support.
