Nigerian School Collapses, Killing 22 Students

In a tragic incident, a two-storey school building in north-central Nigeria collapsed during morning classes on Friday, trapping around 154 students, the Guardian reported.

The source cited authorities confirming that 22 students have died in the tragedy.

The Saints Academy college in Plateau state’s Busa Buji community caved in shortly after students, many of them 15 or younger, arrived for the day. 132 students were rescued and are being treated for injuries at various hospitals.

The state government has blamed the collapse on the school’s “weak structure and location near a riverbank.” Building collapses are an ongoing issue in Nigeria, with more than a dozen such incidents recorded in the past two years. Rescue and health workers were quickly deployed to the scene to search for trapped students.
