Canada’s Ambassador Voices Concerns Over Uyghur Rights in Xinjiang Visit

Canada’s Ambassador to China, Jennifer May, raised concerns about human rights abuses in Xinjiang during a recent visit to the region, Jurist News reported yesterday.

According to a statement from Global Affairs Canada, May met with officials and discussed “credible reports” of violations against Uyghurs and other minorities. This includes restrictions on Uyghur language education and forced placement of children in boarding schools.

These issues echo international criticism of China’s treatment of Uyghurs in Xinjiang.

Last Thursday, campaigning groups, including the World Uyghur Congress, Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, and the International Service for Human Rights, urged the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights to provide a public update on the steps taken by both the Chinese government to improve the situation in Xinjiang.
