India’s Drawn-Out Election Campaign Concludes
India’s general election, the world’s largest, concluded yesterday its grueling two-month campaign period ahead of the final phase of voting on June 1.
During the course of his campaign, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeking a record-equalling third term, shifted his focus from highlighting achievements to attacking opposition parties and their alleged favoritism towards the country’s Muslim minority.
Voting began on April 19 and will wrap up on June 1, with results to be announced on June 4.
While opinion polls suggest Modi’s popularity remains strong, his opponents have criticized his divisive politics and economic issues like unemployment and inflation.
