Heavy Rains, Flooding Claim Nearly 70 Lives in Northern Afghanistan

At least 66 people have perished in northern Afghanistan due to continued heavy rainfall and flooding, Al Jazeera reported today.

According to the news agency, the flooding damaged more than 1,500 houses, swamped more than 400 hectares (1,000 acres) of agricultural land and killed livestock in their hundreds in Faryab province.

This tragedy follows a similar disaster just one day prior in the central Ghor province, which saw 50 lives lost to the intense weather conditions.

Afghanistan’s vulnerability to natural disasters has only been exacerbated by the country’s worsening economic and humanitarian crises in the years since the Taliban takeover in 2021. With development aid dwindling, the Afghan people face an uphill battle in recovering from these devastating floods.
