Chad Faces Dire Humanitarian Crisis Amid Refugee Influx, Climate Woes

Chad is grappling with a severe humanitarian crisis, Xinhua reported on Saturday citing a statement by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

According to OCHA, the country is hosting over 500,000 refugees from neighboring Sudan, straining its resources, while one-third of its 18 million population is in need of food security and nutrition aid, exacerbated by climate change, insecurity, and rising food and fuel prices.

“Since March, the country is also facing torrential rains and floods in the south,” OCHA noted. The UN agency revealed that 2.4 million Chadians are currently food insecure, with 300,000 severely affected.

The $1.1 billion Chad Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan for 2024 is only 6.6% funded, raising concerns about the country’s ability to address this crisis.
