Shias in Afghanistan’s Herat worried about possible terrorist attacks

Shia residents in the province of Herat, Afghanistan are feeling anxious about the possibility of sudden terrorist attacks in the future, as witnessed in the past two weeks and in previous years.

Observers of the Afghan situation told Shia Waves Agency that “the recent attack carried out by the terrorist group ISIS on a Shia mosque in the province of Herat in western Afghanistan has made many Shia in this province concerned about their safety.”

They continued by stating that “the Taliban group, holding the reins of power in the country, has not been able to provide security for them.”

Meanwhile, some relatives of the victims and survivors of terrorist attacks say that they “no longer feel safe in mosques, schools, or even on the streets, and they are constantly worried about terrorist incidents.”

They added that “the recent attack by ISIS on the Shia mosque in Shahrak Mohammadieh shows that this group is present in Herat and very close to innocent Shia individuals.”

According to them, “the presence and activities of ISIS pose a serious threat to Shia and Hazara communities.”

While the United Nations office in Afghanistan condemned the attack in Herat, they called for necessary measures to protect the security of Shia individuals.

It is worth noting that fighters affiliated with the extremist ISIS organization in Afghanistan, who refer to themselves as the Khorasan branch, often target schools, hospitals, mosques, and Shia areas in different parts of the country.
