Experts Warn of Emerging AI Threats to Biosecurity

Biosecurity experts have warned of increasing risks accompanying the rapid development of artificial intelligence tools and their use in the fields of life sciences and biotechnology. They emphasize the need to develop controls to prevent these technologies from being used harmfully or causing scientific errors with serious consequences.

A report published by the security-focused website “BankInfoSecurity” states that pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, as well as research institutions, are increasingly relying on AI tools to accelerate scientific discoveries, develop treatments, and create medical innovations.

The report highlights that the same capabilities that make AI an important tool for scientific research could pose security risks if misused, especially with the development of advanced models, large language models, and other systems capable of helping users process complex scientific information.

According to biosecurity experts, some advanced AI tools can reduce the level of expertise required to handle complex biological research. This raises concerns about their potential exploitation by malicious entities, as well as the possibility of unintended accidents due to errors or unsafe uses.

In the context of addressing these risks, the White House issued a policy document in late July aimed at limiting funding for life sciences research involving high risks. This includes some research related to biological factors that could have negative impacts on public health, biosecurity, or national security.

The new policy emphasizes restricting federal funding for high-risk research conducted in countries or institutions lacking adequate safety, biosecurity, and oversight standards, although the document does not explicitly address the risks posed by artificial intelligence.

Experts stress the importance of developing regulatory mechanisms that keep pace with rapid technological advancements. This would allow for the benefits of AI in medicine and scientific research to be realized while reducing the chances of its misuse and preventing it from becoming a factor that increases biosecurity threats in the future.
