Sydney Islamic Center to Mark Martyrdom of Lady Roqayya

The Imam Ali, peace be upon him, Islamic Center in Sydney, Australia, will host ceremonies to mourn the martyrdom anniversary of Lady Roqayya, peace be upon her.

The programs has been held on Saturday and Sunday, October 28-29, with the participation of followers of Ahlulbait, peace be upon them.

Muslim preacher Hojat-ol-Islam Seyed Ahmad Kazemi will address the two events, speaking about Lady Roqayya, peace be upon her, as a symbol of resistance against oppression and injustice.

Congregational prayers and mourning rituals will be among other parts of the programs.

Hazrat Roqayya, peace be upon her, was the three-year-old daughter of Imam Hussein, peace be upon him, who was martyred in captivity by the army of Yazid after the Battle of Karbala in 680 AD.

The Imam Ali, peace be upon him, Islamic Center in Sydney has been established by Shia Muslims of Pakistani origin.

Its activities include religious programs and mourning ceremonies during the months of Muharram and Safar in the lunar Hijri calendar.

Muslims make up around 5 percent of the population in Australia. Sydney has more Muslims than any other city in the country.
