The world medical charity “Doctors Without Borders” announced on Saturday that it has recorded more than 63,000 cases of cholera in 20 Yemeni provinces since the beginning of 2024.
In its report, the charity said: “20 Yemeni provinces out of 22 are witnessing a significant increase in cases of acute watery diarrhea (cholera).”
It added that “since the beginning of this year, more than 63,000 cases have been reported in the country until May 31, according to health authorities.”
The report clarified that “despite the limited testing capacity in the country, it was found that more than 2,700 of the laboratory-tested cases are confirmed cholera infections.”
The global charity has launched a response to combat the disease in eight provinces, providing medical treatment to patients, training medical and non-medical staff, donating medical supplies, and conducting health awareness activities, according to the report.
On May 12, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) announced that around 1,000 cholera cases are being recorded daily in Yemen.
As a result of the nearly decade-long ongoing conflict, the health sector in Yemen is suffering significant deterioration and a severe shortage of medical equipment and medications, leading to the spread of epidemics and diseases.
