{"id":98413,"date":"2023-11-16T19:30:55","date_gmt":"2023-11-16T16:30:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shiawaves.com\/english\/?p=98413"},"modified":"2023-11-16T19:30:59","modified_gmt":"2023-11-16T16:30:59","slug":"u-k-top-court-rejects-plan-to-deport-migrants-to-rwanda-pm-undeterred","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shiawaves.com\/english\/uncategorized\/98413-u-k-top-court-rejects-plan-to-deport-migrants-to-rwanda-pm-undeterred\/","title":{"rendered":"U.K. top court rejects plan to deport migrants to Rwanda; PM Undeterred"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The UK Supreme Court on Wednesday ruled that a controversial British government plan to send asylum-seekers who arrive in the country as stowaways or in boats to Rwanda is unlawful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Five justices unanimously found that Rwanda is not a safe destination for migrants, writing in their decision that asylum-seekers redirected to the East African nation would be \u201cat real risk of ill-treatment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the verdict, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak pledged on Wednesday that his government will keep seeking ways to send some undocumented immigrants on a one-way journey to Rwanda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ruling, Sunak said, \u201cwas not what we wanted,\u201d adding that his administration would broker a treaty with Rwanda to address the court\u2019s worries, and warning he would consider rewriting British law and backing out of international human rights agreements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Human rights groups have condemned Sunak\u2019s positions on immigration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Amnesty International said the nation\u2019s leaders should \u201cdraw a line under a disgraceful chapter in the U.K.\u2019s political history.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The U.K. branch of ActionAid, a global humanitarian charity, struck a similar tone, saying the Supreme Court\u2019s ruling represents \u201cBritish values of compassion and dignity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thousands of migrants from around the world travel to northern France each year in hope of crossing the Channel.
