{"id":95308,"date":"2023-08-01T00:13:57","date_gmt":"2023-07-31T21:13:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shiawaves.com\/english\/?p=95308"},"modified":"2023-08-01T00:14:02","modified_gmt":"2023-07-31T21:14:02","slug":"world-bank-7-1-million-nigerians-forced-into-poverty-without-social-protection-programs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shiawaves.com\/english\/news\/95308-world-bank-7-1-million-nigerians-forced-into-poverty-without-social-protection-programs\/","title":{"rendered":"World Bank: 7.1 million Nigerians forced into poverty without social protection programs"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The World Bank has disclosed in a new update that around 7.1 million additional Nigerians will be forced into poverty due to inflation in case no compensation is urgently made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The World Bank&#8217;s Nigeria Development Update, released on Thursday, revealed that social protection programs in the African country currently covers merely 19 percent of the total population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>World Bank urged the Nigerian government to invest in the social protection system, saying \u201cInvest in a social protection system that can provide timely, targeted, and temporary support to households experiencing a shock like the increase in PMS (Portfolio Management Services) prices due to subsidy removal.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It confirmed in its update that Nigeria spends only 0.7 percent of GDP on social safety nets and 19 percent of the population is covered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The World Bank cited the social benefits of social protection programs, including human capital investment, education outcomes, and health outcomes.
