Cholas Sadat village, located about 40 km from New Delhi in Uttar Pradesh, is where most Indian Shia Muslims live. As the month of Muharram begins, the village wears black and becomes immersed in the mourning of Imam Hussain, peace be upon him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Imam Hussain’s mourning ceremony is held in Cholas Sadat village day and night. These mourning ceremonies reach their peak on the day of Ashura and the mourners participate in the Ashura procession by appearing in the streets. This procession continues until late at night with chest beating and chanting Noha.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Also, thousands of Muslims gathered together for the Ashura Day procession in Kashmir.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Ashura procession was held with special splendor this year in the city of Kashmir, which is under the control of India and where Azadari was banned since 1990.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Although mourning marches were not allowed in Kashmir since 1990, some small groups held rallies in Muharram, which in most cases ended in violence, and the security forces responded by firing tear gas and bullets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
