Only up to 10,000 Muslims took part in the hajj, a far cry from the 2.5 million who took part in the five-day annual pilgrimage last year.<\/p>\n
Masked pilgrims performed the rituals whilst adhering to the preventive measures.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis year at Mina, instead of gathering the pebbles ourselves for the \u2018pebble throwing ritual\u2019, they were handed to us bagged and sterilized by hajj authorities, to protect against the novel coronavirus,\u201d said a pilgrim.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Pilgrims returned to the Grand Mosque in Mecca later Sunday to perform a final \u201ctawaf\u201d, or circling of the Kaaba — a cubic structure towards which Muslims around the world pray.<\/p>\n
\u00a0\u201cThe hajj this year was restricted to a very limited number of people from multiple nationalities, ensuring the ritual was completed despite the difficult circumstances,\u201d said a Saudi official.<\/p>\n
Health authorities said no coronavirus cases were reported at the holy sites during the hajj.<\/p>\n
