{"id":94101,"date":"2023-06-16T17:26:51","date_gmt":"2023-06-16T14:26:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shiawaves.com\/english\/?p=94101"},"modified":"2023-06-16T17:26:56","modified_gmt":"2023-06-16T14:26:56","slug":"first-us-female-muslim-federal-judge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shiawaves.com\/english\/uncategorized\/94101-first-us-female-muslim-federal-judge\/","title":{"rendered":"First US Female Muslim Federal Judge"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>US Senate confirms First Female Muslim Federal Judge<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nusrat Choudhury was confirmed Thursday as a federal judge by the US Senate, making history as the first Muslim woman and the first Bangladeshi American to join the federal judicial bench.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The US Senate narrowly approved Choudhury&#8217;s nomination in a 50-49 vote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She is 47 years old and graduated from Columbia University, Princeton University, and Yale Law School.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Choudhury, who currently serves as a legal director for the Illinois chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), will join the US District Court for the Eastern District of New York.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ACLU has tweeted its congratulations, saying &#8220;Nusrat is a trailblazing civil rights lawyer and her confirmation will be an asset to our nation\u2019s legal system.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Choudhury is the second Muslim American federal judge, following Zahid Quraishi &#8211; district judge of the District Court of New Jersey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to some political analysts, her historic confirmation highlights the lack of diversity among federal judges, by race and ethnicity, and gender.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A 2022 CNN review revealed that while the bench of US federal judges has steadily grown more diverse,&nbsp; women and non-White groups remain underrepresented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"864\" height=\"486\" src=\"https:\/\/shiawaves.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/06\/NEWS-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-94102\" srcset=\"https:\/\/shiawaves.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/06\/NEWS-4.jpg 864w, https:\/\/shiawaves.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/06\/NEWS-4-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/shiawaves.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/06\/NEWS-4-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/shiawaves.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/06\/NEWS-4-390x220.jpg 390w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 864px) 100vw, 864px\" \/><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>US Senate confirms First Female Muslim Federal Judge Nusrat Choudhury was confirmed Thursday as a federal judge by the US Senate, making history as the first Muslim woman and the first Bangladeshi American to join the federal judicial bench.
