UN specialized agencies have reiterated their warning about rising hunger and acute food insecurity around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Food Programme (WFP) warned, in a report published earlier this week, that “hunger is set to worsen in 18 \u201chotspots\u201d worldwide including Sudan, where armed conflict is putting people at risk of starvation.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The joint report said that “Sudan, Burkina Faso, Haiti and Mali have been elevated to the highest alert level, joining Afghanistan, Nigeria, Somalia, South Sudan and Yemen.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It added that, “Additionally, a likely El Ni\u00f1o \u2013 a naturally occurring climatic phenomenon that has a warming effect on ocean surface temperatures in the central and east Pacific – is also raising fears of climate extremes in vulnerable nations.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
