At least 30 people have been killed in ethnic clashes in the north-eastern Indian state of Manipur, officials say.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The violence broke out earlier this week when indigenous tribes protested against moves to grant tribal status to the Meiteis, promising them access to forest lands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Other ethnic groups fear that the Meiteis may now occupy the forest dwellings they have inherited for generations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Indian army has dispatched thousands of troops to control the situation, with curfew in place and internet cut off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
