Two sets of data, one from a Western military source and the other from an independent body, show an increase in attacks of more than 70 percent during the period from the beginning of March to 15 April compared to that of last year.<\/p>\n
On the other hand, Afghan government data indicates that more than 900 members of the Afghan local and national forces were killed during the same period, up from 520 in the same period last year.<\/p>\n
At the same time, the number of Taliban deaths has fallen to 610 in the same period, down from approximately 1,660 a year ago, after US and Afghan forces reduced attacks and air strikes following the agreement between the United States and the Taliban.<\/p>\n
Senior Western, Afghan and independent officials who follow the situation on the ground in the war-ravaged country say the increased attacks show the group’s deliberate disrespect for the commitment to reduce violence stipulated in the agreement signed in late February.<\/p>\n
“Taliban fighters do not hit large government centers or cities, but rather focus on villages in the provinces of Herat, Kabul, Kandahar and Balkh, which have recorded the largest number of coronavirus infections,” said a senior Western security official, who asked not to be identified.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
