{"id":87156,"date":"2022-11-02T11:26:16","date_gmt":"2022-11-02T11:26:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shiawaves.com\/english\/?p=87156"},"modified":"2022-11-02T11:26:21","modified_gmt":"2022-11-02T11:26:21","slug":"icc-resumes-investigation-of-suspected-war-crimes-in-afghanistan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shiawaves.com\/english\/news\/87156-icc-resumes-investigation-of-suspected-war-crimes-in-afghanistan\/","title":{"rendered":"ICC resumes investigation of suspected war crimes in Afghanistan"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Judges at the International Criminal Court decided yesterday, Monday that Prosecutor Karim Khan can resume an investigation into atrocities in Afghanistan, which has been delayed for more than two years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The judges said the investigation could move forward, as Kabul &#8220;is not currently conducting substantive investigations&#8221; into alleged crimes under the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/shiawaves.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2022\/11\/images.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-87157\" width=\"847\" height=\"474\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The judges considered that Afghanistan is not currently conducting serious investigations that could justify postponing the investigations of the court,&#8221; the court statement said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In early 2020, the ousted Afghan government asked the International Criminal Court &#8211; based in The Hague &#8211; to suspend its investigation to give Kabul an opportunity to conduct its own investigations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the current attorney general, Karim Khan, decided last year to dismiss the United States in the investigation, saying that the &#8220;worst crimes&#8221; were committed by the Taliban, the Taliban ISIS terrorist organizations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/shiawaves.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2022\/11\/download-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-87158\" width=\"839\" height=\"470\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Human rights organizations criticized Khan&#8217;s decision to &#8220;deprioritize&#8221; the investigation into the crimes committed by US forces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The International Criminal Court&#8217;s investigation into US crimes has long infuriated Washington, prompting the administration of former President Donald Trump to impose sanctions on the body&#8217;s former attorney general.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"639\" src=\"https:\/\/shiawaves.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2022\/11\/Justice-1024x639.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-87159\" srcset=\"https:\/\/shiawaves.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2022\/11\/Justice-1024x639.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/shiawaves.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2022\/11\/Justice-300x187.jpg 300w, https:\/\/shiawaves.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2022\/11\/Justice-768x479.jpg 768w, https:\/\/shiawaves.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2022\/11\/Justice.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Since the Taliban took control of Afghanistan in mid-August of 2021, suicide attacks and bombings targeting cities and minorities, especially Hazara Shias, have increased, and the terrorist &#8220;ISIS&#8221; organization usually claims responsibility for these attacks.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Judges at the International Criminal Court decided yesterday, Monday that Prosecutor Karim Khan can resume an investigation into atrocities in Afghanistan, which has been delayed for more than two years.
