{"id":8551,"date":"2020-01-16T12:57:37","date_gmt":"2020-01-16T12:57:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shiawaves.com\/english\/news\/world\/8551-non-muslim-teachers-wear-islamic-veil-in-protest-of-local-burqa-ban-in-sweden\/"},"modified":"2020-01-16T12:57:37","modified_gmt":"2020-01-16T12:57:37","slug":"non-muslim-teachers-wear-islamic-veil-in-protest-of-local-burqa-ban-in-sweden","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shiawaves.com\/english\/news\/world\/8551-non-muslim-teachers-wear-islamic-veil-in-protest-of-local-burqa-ban-in-sweden\/","title":{"rendered":"Non-Muslim teachers wear Islamic veil in protest of local \u2018burqa ban\u2019 in Sweden"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 12.16px;\">After the Sweden Democrats proposed a bill in 2018 to go \u201cagainst the full-covering Muslim veil in all public places\u201d, the local council in southern Sweden, Skurup, introduced a ban on<\/span><\/p>\n<p>  <!--more-->  <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12.16px;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>After the Sweden Democrats proposed a bill in 2018 to go \u201cagainst the full-covering Muslim veil in all public places\u201d, the local council in southern Sweden, Skurup, introduced a ban on \u201creligious headgear\u201d in primary schools and preschools.<\/p>\n<p>Following this decision, non-Muslim teachers and staff have adopted the headscarf and, in some cases, donned the whole face veil (also known as \u2018niqab\u2019) to show their support for their Muslim students.<\/p>\n<p>Marit was one of six non-Muslim teachers to show their support, saying:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe students get excited when they see that we also have veils. They feel that we support them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This action has been taken as a protest against the local council\u2019s decision, but also an objection to \u2018ban the burqa\u2019 all over the country.<\/p>\n<p>The chair of Malmo\u2019s Young Muslims, Tasnim Raoof, argues that the ban denies \u201cMuslim women\u2019s right to their\u2026democratic freedom of choice.\u201d After the Skurup council implemented the ban, Raoof went on to say, \u201cthis criminalizes Muslim girls.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The burqa ban in Skurup has allowed a new ripple of racism and hate to take place, which in the wider scale will eventually become a wave that is spread across the whole of Sweden.
