Eight people were killed and others were injured when security forces fired on the participants in the Arbaeen marches of Imam Hussein, peace be upon him, in the Nigerian capital Abuja.
Local sources reported, that the security forces opened fire on the crowd only for their participation in marches of solidarity with the Arbaeen Pilgrimage, which resulted in the death of 8 people and the injury of more than 10 others.
One of the organizers of the march, Abdullah Muhammad, said that the participants were walking peacefully on the Abuja-Kubwa highway when they were surprised by a joint team of police and army who opened tear gas and live bullets on them to disperse them, confirming the arrest of two participants in the march.
Muhammad added, “When the police and soldiers arrived, they started firing tear gas and then later, and used live ammunition on us. Most of those present were women and children.”
