{"id":7109,"date":"2019-02-20T16:12:16","date_gmt":"2019-02-20T16:12:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shiawaves.com\/english\/news\/world\/7109-pew-research-african-americans-find-haven-in-islamic-heritage\/"},"modified":"2019-02-20T16:12:16","modified_gmt":"2019-02-20T16:12:16","slug":"pew-research-african-americans-find-haven-in-islamic-heritage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shiawaves.com\/english\/news\/world\/7109-pew-research-african-americans-find-haven-in-islamic-heritage\/","title":{"rendered":"Pew Research: African Americans find haven in Islamic heritage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>According to a recent Pew Research report, which concluded its findings last month, most black Americans though identify with Christianity, many of them follow Islam and reconvert to the faith of their ancestors from various religions, Post And Courier reported on February 17.<\/p>\n<p>  <!--more-->  <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h4>According to a recent Pew Research report, which concluded its findings last month, most black Americans though identify with Christianity, many of them follow Islam and reconvert to the faith of their ancestors from various religions, Post And Courier reported on February 17.<\/h4>\n<h4>\u201cThe first Muslims that came to America were enslaved Africans,\u201d said Dr. Muhammad Fraser-Rahim, who curated the College of Charleston\u2019s digital exhibit named: \u2018Enslaved and Freed African Muslims: Spiritual Wayfarers in the South and Lowcountry.\u2019<\/h4>\n<h4>The professor refers to millions of West Africans who were forced on slave ships to the New World hundreds of years ago. Many of them came from Muslim and pagan religious backgrounds in Africa.<\/h4>\n<h4>However, preserving their Islamic faith proved difficult under European enslavement in a predominantly Christian environment. As a result, most African Americans today identify with Christianity.<\/h4>\n<h4>But the new Pew survey notes that Black African Muslims account for a fifth of American Muslims.
