The Iraqi army on Wednesday blamed \u201cunidentified gunmen\u201d for the Tuesday death of six protesters. \u201cThe protesters slain yesterday in downtown Basra were killed by unknown gunmen in a car,\u201d army commander Jamil al-Shammari said in a statement.<\/p>\n
Jan Kubis, the United Nations (UN)\u2019s envoy to Iraq, has called for \u201ccalm\u201d in Basra, asking Baghdad to \u201cinvestigate and hold accountable those responsible for the outbreak of violence\u201d and \u201cdo its utmost to respond to the people\u2019s rightful demands of clean water and electricity supplies.\u201d<\/p>\n
Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said on Tuesday that he had ordered \u201cno real bullets… to be fired in the direction of protesters or in the air.\u201d<\/p>\n
