The commander of the Taliban\u2019s \u201cspecial forces\u201d branch, known as the \u201cRed Unit,\u201d was killed last week in Helmand province by Afghan forces, according to Afghanistan\u2019s main intelligence agency.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The commander of the Taliban\u2019s \u201cspecial forces\u201d branch, known as the \u201cRed Unit,\u201d was killed last week in Helmand province by Afghan forces, according to Afghanistan\u2019s main intelligence agency.\u00a0<\/h4>\n

The National Directorate of Security (NDS) said Mullah Shah Wali, also known as Mullah Naser, was killed in an air operation in Helmand.\u00a0<\/h4>\n

The province is a Taliban stronghold in the heartland of Afghanistan\u2019s lucrative drug trade.\u00a0<\/h4>\n

Wali became the commander of the Taliban\u2019s \u201cRed Unit\u201d as well as deputy shadow governor of Helmand province three years ago and was directly involved in Taliban offensives, the statement said.\u00a0<\/h4>\n

The \u201cRed Unit\u201d is thought to be equipped with advanced weapons, including night vision scopes, 82mm rockets, heavy machine guns and U.S.-made assault rifles, according to the Afghan military.\u00a0<\/h4>\n

Wali was killed alongside a suicide bomber and two other Taliban commanders in Helmand\u2019s Musa Qala district, according to the NDS.<\/h4>\n
